Whew! I did it. I finally did it. The epiphany of becoming a yoga teacher has finally arrived. I’m going to do a 100-hour Ashtanga teacher training this Summer! πŸŽŠπŸŽ‰πŸŽˆ

Honestly, I had no idea yoga would influence my life so so much when I first started my practice back in 2014. I had no idea how I transitioned from being a night owl working three restaurant jobs day and night… and into a morning bird- waking up at 5am everyday when everyone is still in la la land to practice yoga… yup, not just for one or two days… but every single day.

I also cannot remember why I started yoga. I didn’t practice with the intention of loosing weight, to destress, or for any particular reason really. What I do know is that, I am so much more alive and awake with yoga in my life!

Yoga popped up at every corner of my life. It followed me everywhere because guess what I learned?

Breathing. This simplest and most essential tool of human survival, yet all along since childhood I’ve been breathing the wrong way. My breathing was shallow and sometimes I even feel like I forget to breathe (no kidding!). My mind would fog and my eye lids would droop down over a pile of books. Growing up, I was definitely not school material (haha!). Instead, I’ve always been very hands-on and like to be up on my feet because that’s when my mind is the most active and alive.

Yoga. A breathing and moving meditation. Looking back. I think this is the reason why I’m so drawn to yoga. I don’t have a traumatic story to tell. My journey to how I found yoga was very natural, calm, and peaceful. Just like the simple, yet intimate act of breathing.

Anyways, here’s a brief timeline of my yoga journey. From being a YouTube self learner and into a yoga teacher.

2014-2016

  • Who inspired me to practice yoga? Tara stiles, yoga with Adrienne, and Kino yoga from YouTube videos.
  • What styles did I practice? Various types but primarily vinyasa and bikram/hot yoga.
  • When did I practice? When I wake up in the morning, before anything else that I have to tackle for the rest of my day. And as a cool down after working out at the gym.
  • Where did I practice? Aside from home and the gym, I would occasionally take a yoga class in a studio (frequent go-tos: Hot flex yoga and yoga to the people)
  • Did I think about becoming a yoga teacher? Probably not yet.

2016-2017

  • Did I think about becoming a yoga teacher? Actually many thought I was a yoga teacher already but I felt I wasn’t capable of being a teacher. I felt I wasn’t good enough to teacher and needed more practice (a very common misconception!)

February 2017- present

  • Who inspires me to practice yoga? Kino yoga from YouTube. Teachers and students of Jivamukt yoga school. Oh and ofc, all the beautiful yogis from Instagram!
  • What styles do I practice? Ashtanga.
  • When do I practice? Every morning, 5-6x a week.
  • Where do I practice? Jivamukti yoga school
  • Did I think about becoming a yoga teacher? Yes. Yes. Yes!

Currently

  • Who inspires me to practice yoga? My teachers, my practice, and myself. My search for understanding the deeper aspects of yoga.
  • What styles do I practice? Ashtanga.
  • When do I practice? Every morning, 5-6x a week. Off on moon days.
  • Where do I practice? Jivamukti, Pure Yoga, and at home.
